Each back is screwed on to the back with four brass screws (not shown in the pictures)
These chairs are extremely well built. The original upholstery was vinyl, and latex foam. Because of the protection from the vinyl, the latex foam in in like new condition.
However, if the original upholstery was a fabric, the foam underneath is always a goner.
